About the Course
Marching Band (Marching Hawks) is the most active and visible ensemble in the Horizon High School band program, proudly continuing a long-standing tradition of excellence in performance and presentation. As the core ensemble for many of the program’s travel and international performance opportunities, the Marching Hawks represent Horizon both locally and beyond.
Marching Band meets during the school day in 1st quarter as a block class and earns students ½ credit. In addition to class time, members should expect rehearsals and performances outside the school day. This ensemble focuses on developing strong instrumental technique while marching, as well as performance skills specific to marching band literature and style.
All students enrolled in Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony are expected to participate in Marching Band during 1st quarter, unless extenuating circumstances are discussed with and approved by the directors prior to registration. Colorguard students may enroll in Marching Band without participation in another large ensemble. Marching Band offers a high-energy, team-centered experience that builds musicianship, discipline, pride, and school spirit.
Program Highlights & Competitive Tradition
The Marching Hawks are a competitive marching band program, regularly participating in quarterfinal and semifinal competitions, and have earned finalist placements twice in the program’s history. In addition to the competitive season, the ensemble proudly represents Horizon High School in local parades and community events, and serves as the foundation for the band program’s domestic and international travel experiences. These opportunities provide students with high-level performance experiences, cultural enrichment, and the chance to represent their school on prestigious stages at home and abroad. The Marching Hawks regularly represent Horizon High School at high-profile local, national, and international events. Past performances include the Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Dublin St. Patrick’s Day Parade, appearances at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and international travel with performances in Vienna, Budapest, and London. Domestically, the ensemble has also performed in destinations such as Hawaii and New York City, among others. These experiences provide students with meaningful cultural exposure and the opportunity to represent Horizon with pride on stages around the world.
